CBCS-Network, with the support of Agroecology Fund, CS Fund, and AFSA, has initiated a comprehensive agroecology campaign in the provinces of Maniema and South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The project aims to empower local communities, particularly women, to adopt agroecological practices, enhance food sovereignty, and protect the region’s precious forests. By promoting the use of indigenous seeds and traditional knowledge, CBCS-Network seeks to build resilience to climate change and foster economic development.
Despite the challenges posed by the previous season’s drought, the communities remain steadfast in their commitment to agroecology. The recent launch of the campaign in Wamaza, Maniema province, marked a significant milestone, with the distribution of over six tons of local seeds.
CBCS-Network’s focus on gender equality is evident in the high participation of women in the project. Women-led producer associations are at the forefront of the agroecological transition in this region.
While challenges such as limited market access persist, the organization is exploring innovative solutions, including partnerships with financial institutions like Equity CBDC. This collaboration promises to strengthen the economic viability of agroecological enterprises.
The campaign aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable agroecology and biodiversity conservation. By sharing experiences with international partners, CBCS-Network aims to position the DRC as a leader in agroecology in Africa within the Congo Basin.
